My name is Andrew Parrott and I'm an artist living and working in Belleville, Ontario. I have started this studio art practice to extend my art therapy regimen and offer insights from my life as a consumer of mental health services. My approach to art-making is interdisciplinary and involves extensive research. I am interested in such fields of inquiry as art therapy, outsider art & art brüt. The work I do is relevant because my aim as an artist is to create works of art that trigger personal growth and in so doing instigate positive improvements to mental healthcare systems, locally and abroad.
To add a brief personal narrative and provide a bit of context to my work I feel it's worth mentioning here that I began drawing in earnest at the age of six; As I progressed through elementary and secondary school my efforts were acknowledged with multiple awards in fine art. It was also during this time that I began receiving services as a psychiatric outpatient. This upbringing inspired a lifelong passion for creativity, art-making and their alleged links to psychological well-being. It is my sincerest intent to proliferate this knowledge to anyone who, like myself, honours their psychiatric treatment regimen but struggles to sustain their creative energy while in recovery. I have resolved to find ways around these hurdles - antipsychotic medications be damned - and I hope that others will have their feelings validated when they view my artwork.
My chosen mediums are acrylics & oils and I am currently retraining as a graphic arts technician through a grant made possible by Better Jobs Ontario. I paint portraits, landscapes and figurative work by implementing a streamlined version of an Italian renaissance painting technique that I learned from watching a series of videos offered by the Academy of Realist Art located in Toronto, Ontario. To place my art in the context of the western art history canon, I would have to guess it belongs somewhere among the outsider, naïve or visionary art traditions. Unlike most of these artists, however, I will be posting images of my art on social media as I amass a more substantial portfolio. Until this time viewings and commissions of my work are being scheduled by appointment only.
Since I am in the early stages of my art career I price my work based on the minimum wage in Ontario, Canada for time spent on a piece, plus the cost of materials and all applicable taxes, shipping fees, etc. What matters now is that I continue compliance with my treatment plan and get to work. I'm sure it will be a pleasure doing business with you.
